Instant switch-over: why nothing resets when the grid drops

The difference between a blink and no blink matters more than people expect. A gap of a second or two is enough to reboot a modem, stop a pump and wipe a computer's unsaved work.

What UPS mode means

UPS stands for uninterruptible power supply. In UPS mode, the 15 kW hybrid inverter keeps the 30 to 40 kWh LiFePO4 battery connected and ready, so when grid voltage drops or fails, the house is carried on battery power with no meaningful gap. The inverter also isolates the house from the dead grid line so no power flows back out to line workers. It all happens automatically.

What it would keep running

  • Modem and wifi with no reconnect
  • Computers with unsaved work
  • Alarm panel and gate controller
  • Freezer compressor
  • Pressure pump holding prime

The cost of a gap

A standby generator takes seconds to detect an outage and start, and longer to stabilise. During that gap everything electronic restarts. Modems take minutes to reconnect, alarm panels go into fault, freezers restart their cycle, and computers lose whatever was unsaved. Pumps may lose pressure or prime.

Some loads are more sensitive than others. Home medical devices often have their own batteries, but the people relying on them still need a plan from their clinician and should keep their power company's medically dependent registration. Instant switch-over helps, but it is not a hospital-grade supply.

How it works →
The H2OME loop: an electrolyser splits water into hydrogen, the hydrogen is stored in a tank for weeks, a fuel cell turns it into electricity for your home, and the water returns to the loop.

Where hydrogen comes in

The battery covers the instant switch-over and the first hours. As it runs down during a longer outage, the fuel cell starts and draws on stored hydrogen to keep it topped up. The house never sees the fuel cell starting, because the battery was already carrying the load. When the grid returns, the inverter switches back and recharges the battery and electrolyser, again with no blink.

Questions

Is it really instant?

The inverter is designed to switch over so quickly that household appliances carry on without resetting. That is the point of UPS mode. Real performance will be measured in bench and pilot testing.

What happens when the grid comes back?

The inverter detects stable grid supply, synchronises with it and reconnects the house without a blink. The battery then recharges first, and the electrolyser can refill hydrogen storage, ideally during the next off-peak window.

Can a generator do the same with an add-on?

A generator paired with a separate UPS or battery can avoid the gap for the loads that UPS covers. A whole-house hybrid inverter and battery does it for every circuit it supplies.
