Hydrogen home power for New Zealand

For rural homes, lifestyle blocks and farms considering what happens when the power lines stop.

Your property, before the equipment.

A New Zealand lifestyle block can depend on electricity for more than lighting. A tank-water pump, bore, freezer, gate or internet connection may sit on the same supply. Start by recording which services must keep working, which can wait, and what happens if the road or communications are unavailable as well as the electricity.

Backup for an existing grid connection and power for a property beyond the grid are different projects. The first needs safe changeover and a defined essential-load plan. The second also needs a measured electricity source and enough recovery time to replenish storage. A nearby town name alone cannot establish either requirement for your property.

The proposed H2OME 10 kW system

H2OME is exploring a hydrogen storage system with a 10 kW electrical output design target. Electricity would split water into hydrogen; a fuel cell would later convert the stored hydrogen back into electricity and water. Hydrogen stores energy rather than creating it, and conversion losses matter when assessing grid, wind or micro-hydro charging.

The project is at the desk study stage. Output, storage duration, peak-load support, installation requirements and certification still need to be established. Price and availability have not been announced. Registering interest is not a purchase, a guaranteed installation or confirmation that a property is suitable.

Explore rural New Zealand locations

Browse the regional indexes to find the towns currently covered. This is a curated collection, not a complete register of every rural settlement, and a location page does not imply local installation availability.

What to check locally

Ask your electricity distributor about connection and changeover requirements, and use a licensed electrical professional to assess circuits, protection and pump starting demand. Discuss siting, access and any consent questions with the relevant council and qualified assessors. Tank water quality, exposure to weather and access for maintenance need property-specific assessment, not assumptions from a regional page.

Keep a separate contingency for medical or other critical needs. An unproven system is not a substitute for an established emergency plan. For the Australian country section, explore hydrogen home power in Australia.
