Site assessment in Australia

Identify access, water, environmental and layout questions for qualified assessors, not DIY installation.

Choose the question, then the property

The 5 topics below use ten different property contexts. Select the setting whose operating boundary matches your situation, rather than assuming a whole-property rating from a small appliance example.

H2OME is in early development. Its 10 kW output figure is a design target, not a proven specification. There is no confirmed price, certification, commercial availability or guaranteed runtime in this guide.

In Australia, check connection questions with your electricity retailer and distributor. Use electrical professionals holding the licence required in your state or territory, and ask the local council about relevant siting, building and water-use requirements. Energy Made Easy covers New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory; outside those jurisdictions, check the relevant state or territory consumer energy comparison resource. Compare your actual tariff and charging window, not an assumed national rate. This guide does not claim to know a particular state's approval process.

Preparing a site survey

A useful survey pack includes photographs taken from safe public or user-accessible positions, a property layout, the load inventory and existing service information. Include occupied spaces, vehicle movement, adjacent activities and the proposed access route for qualified assessors.

Weather and flood exposure

Identify water paths, known site drainage issues and exposure of access routes without inventing regional flood or storm statistics. Ask the assessor about equipment environmental limits and how the site remains accessible for inspection. Historical property observations can be useful if their source and date are clear.

Equipment and service access

A proposed system needs a safe route for delivery, professional servicing and emergency response. Record gate widths, steps, occupied walkways and vehicle patterns for assessment. Think about the ordinary service visit as well as the initial placement of equipment.

Assessing equipment noise

A fuel cell has no combustion engine, but a complete system may contain fans, pumps and other auxiliaries. Ask for measured sound information for the whole equipment set and its operating modes. Neighbours and sleeping areas can be affected by timing and tonal character, not just a headline sound value.

Unattended property constraints

A site left empty needs a plan for detecting and responding to faults. Communications can fail at the same time as power, and an alarm sent to an absent owner may not lead to a timely visit. Ask what state the equipment enters without communications or an authorised responder.
