Home / Uses / Bushfire season and your home power plan
In fire season the grid can drop because a fire hit the lines, or because the network switched them off on purpose. A power plan helps, but it never replaces a written bushfire survival plan.
No backup power system changes the core advice from fire services: decide in advance whether you will leave early, and act on that decision. If your plan is to leave, go, and leave the equipment to its automatic shutdown. A hydrogen store is still a fuel store, and we will not pretend otherwise. It is designed with redundant leak sensors, automatic shutdown and venting, but nothing about it makes a house safer to stay in during a fire front.
Treat the enclosure the way you would treat an LPG bottle cage or a fuel shed. Keep the ground around it clear of leaf litter, bark mulch, dry grass and stacked firewood, and keep it away from overhanging branches. Ask about defendable space and setbacks when you talk to your council and the pilot team, because the right distance depends on your site and local rules.
Rake around the base whenever you clean the gutters before summer. Wind-blown embers collect in the same sheltered corners where leaves pile up against walls, fences and enclosures, so a bare, clean strip around the equipment is worth more than any amount of watering on the day itself.
How it works →
The useful part of fire season is the long, hot, smoky stretch when lines are down or switched off but the fire is not on your doorstep. Pumps for firefighting water tanks, sprinkler systems, the modem for emergency alerts and a fridge full of medicine all matter then. The system is designed to switch over instantly, so a pump does not stall halfway through filling a tank. Petrol or diesel generators need refuelling in exactly the heat where nobody wants to handle fuel.
If it is an electric pump within the 15 kW output, it is designed to. Many fire pumps are petrol driven so they work with nothing else running, and that is a sound choice to keep. Electric pumps should be tested on backup before the season, not on the day.
The system is designed to shut down and vent if sensors detect a fault, and the buffer holds hydrogen at 30 bar or less. Even so, treat it as a fuel store in your fire plan, tell fire crews it is there, and follow advice to leave early.
A fuel cell draws in air for the oxygen it needs, so heavy smoke and ash are a real question for any fuel cell. How the air intake filtering performs in smoke is one of the things bench testing and pilot homes are meant to establish, so we will not claim an answer yet.
Pilot installs go to people on this list first. Rural homes, farms and remote sites especially. No spam, no payment.
