Essential load inventory for small business premises in New Zealand

New Zealand planning guidance for a specific property and load boundary. Measure equipment during actual business operations. H2OME remains in early development.

Essential load inventory: the decision to make

Start with tasks, not every socket. Food storage, drinking water, communication and safe movement are separate needs, each with an appliance, an operating window and an alternative. Record rated watts as a first pass, then measure representative use because a nameplate may describe a maximum rather than an average.

A list is only useful if somebody can explain why each item remains on it. An appliance that feels convenient during normal operation may consume the reserve intended for a more important task. Keep essential, deferrable and excluded loads in separate columns.

Priorities for small business premises

Process equipment, large refrigeration, compressors and all-day trading should not be implied by a small essential-load calculation.

The property boundary

A shop or service office needs to distinguish safe closure from continued trading. Refrigeration, transaction equipment and security have different consequences, and a powered till does not ensure payment networks work.

For small business premises, start by confirming why selected refrigeration, assumed average belongs on the essential list. Then challenge whether an extra task lamp not included in the base list belongs in the list: its 0.06 kWh should be included only when it serves an agreed task, not because it happened to be plugged in.

Measure equipment during actual business operations. Any food, workplace or regulated service obligation needs its own contingency assessment. A development-stage product is not evidence that a business can continue trading safely.

A worked demand worksheet

All numbers below are hypothetical teaching inputs, not measured appliance specifications or product performance. The topic-specific extra load is separate from the base set; omit it if your real inventory already counts it. This worksheet does not include conversion overhead, protection design or a contingency allowance.

For small business premises, assume the selected base loads average 0.46 kW for 6 hours: 0.46 × 6 = 2.76 kWh. Separately, an extra task lamp not included in the base list draws an assumed 12 W for 5 hours: (12 ÷ 1,000) × 5 = 0.06 kWh. The combined illustrative demand is 2.82 kWh.

Small additions are easy to overlook when several people each add one device.

For arithmetic only, if the complete storage chain had a hypothetical 30% round-trip efficiency, delivering 2.82 kWh would require 2.82 ÷ 0.30 = 9.4 kWh of charging input. This is not a measured H2OME efficiency or recovery result. Ongoing demand during charging would add to the required input.

Base assumptions

Base operating window: 6 hours. Extra illustrative load: An extra task lamp not included in the base list, 12 W for 5 hours. Replace every input with a measured or professionally established value.

Professional review in New Zealand

In New Zealand, discuss supply arrangements and connection questions with your electricity retailer and distributor. Ask the local council about relevant siting, building and water-use requirements. Use appropriately qualified electrical and hydrogen professionals, and refer workplace safety questions to WorkSafe guidance. This page does not establish a consent or compliance outcome.

For medically dependent people in New Zealand, register with your electricity retailer, the company that bills you, and keep that registration current. Re-register when switching retailers; ask the retailer how the distributor is informed and what clinical confirmation is needed. Follow the clinician and equipment provider's contingency plan. Registration does not guarantee uninterrupted electricity, and H2OME is not a substitute for that plan.

H2OME is in early development. Its 10 kW output figure is a design target, not a proven specification. There is no confirmed price, certification, commercial availability or guaranteed runtime in this guide.

Hydrogen is an energy store, not free energy. Grid input, wind and micro-hydro are the charging options considered here. Each requires its own supply assessment. Do not install hydrogen equipment, modify fixed wiring, bypass protection or improvise a connection from this guide.

Questions

What changes for small business premises?

A shop or service office needs to distinguish safe closure from continued trading. Refrigeration, transaction equipment and security have different consequences, and a powered till does not ensure payment networks work. Measure equipment during actual business operations.

Does this calculation show how long H2OME would run small business premises?

No. The 2.82 kWh total is an illustrative demand worksheet, not a runtime result. Actual appliance measurements, usable storage output, starting demand, conversion overhead and reserve limits are needed. The 10 kW design target is not demonstrated output capability.

Who should review the proposal?

In New Zealand, discuss supply arrangements and connection questions with your electricity retailer and distributor. Ask the local council about relevant siting, building and water-use requirements. Use appropriately qualified electrical and hydrogen professionals, and refer workplace safety questions to WorkSafe guidance. This page does not establish a consent or compliance outcome. Use the worksheet to brief the relevant professionals, not to install, modify or operate hydrogen equipment.
