Keeping the taps running when the pump station loses power

Small community water schemes depend on pumps, dosing and treatment equipment. In long outages, reservoirs drain and boil water notices follow. This page looks honestly at pump station backup.

Pumps, dosing and the telemetry

A small rural water scheme might have a borehole or river intake pump, a booster pump to a hilltop reservoir, chemical dosing pumps, UV treatment and a telemetry unit reporting levels to the operator. The dosing, UV and telemetry are small loads. The pumps are the question: smaller pumps may sit within 15 kW, larger ones may need a bigger setup or may not be a fit at all.

What it would keep running

  • Booster or bore pump within size
  • Chemical dosing pumps
  • UV treatment unit
  • Telemetry and level sensors
  • Control panel and lighting

Motor starts and peak headroom

Pump motors draw a surge when they start. The battery and hybrid inverter give peak headroom above 15 kW for short starts, and a soft starter or variable speed drive on the pump reduces the surge further. The pilot would check each motor's rating and starting behaviour before relying on the system.

Where a station has several large pumps or a treatment plant with blowers and mixers, the honest answer is a larger or multi-unit setup sized in the pilot, and that would be decided with the scheme's engineers and operator, who carry the responsibility for safe drinking water.

How it works →
The H2OME loop: an electrolyser splits water into hydrogen, the hydrogen is stored in a tank for weeks, a fuel cell turns it into electricity for your home, and the water returns to the loop.

Days, not hours

Generators at pump stations need someone to refuel them, often on roads blocked by the same storm. Hydrogen stored at 30 bar or less keeps for weeks and runs the fuel cell without a refuelling visit. Round trip efficiency is 30% or less, so this is standby power, not cheaper day to day pumping. It charges on off-peak power when the grid is up.

Questions

Can it run a large bore pump?

It depends on the motor. Small to medium pumps may fit within 15 kW with peak headroom for starting. Large pumps or several running together would need a larger or multi-unit setup, or may not be a fit. The pilot would check the actual motors.

Who decides whether it goes in?

Water schemes are run by councils, trusts or operators with their own engineers and drinking water obligations. Any install would be their decision, designed with them, and would sit inside their existing safety and compliance requirements.

Does the electrolyser take water from the scheme?

It needs about 9 litres of water per kilogram of hydrogen, filtered and de-ionised on board, and the fuel cell gives most of it back. That is a small amount next to what any scheme pumps, but it would be metered and agreed.
