Medical electricity contingency for a remote cabin in New Zealand

New Zealand planning guidance for a specific property and load boundary. Choose loads that genuinely need unattended supply. H2OME remains in early development.

Medical electricity contingency: the decision to make

Where medical equipment depends on electricity, the clinical contingency plan comes first. Ask the clinician and equipment provider about required supply quality, supported backup arrangements, alarms and when to move to another location. Do not infer a safe operating period from an appliance label or a household calculation.

H2OME is in early development and must not be relied on as a medical safety guarantee or a replacement for established backup and relocation arrangements. Keep registration with the electricity supplier current, and ensure the plan still works when local power and communications fail together.

Priorities for remote cabin

Electric space heating, water heating and cooking can dominate a small cabin energy budget and are excluded from this example.

The property boundary

Delivery, weather access and long periods without an occupant affect the decision. The smallest load set is not automatically the simplest system if nobody can respond to an alarm or inspect it.

For a remote cabin, keep the 2.64 kWh worksheet explicitly nonclinical. Add no medical appliance to this calculation without its provider's supply requirements and clinician-led contingency; the property priorities cannot overrule that plan.

Choose loads that genuinely need unattended supply. A remote site needs a service and communications plan before it needs an autonomy claim. Unattended operation, frost exposure and access must be assessed using equipment-specific evidence.

A worked demand worksheet

All numbers below are hypothetical teaching inputs, not measured appliance specifications or product performance. The topic-specific extra load is separate from the base set; omit it if your real inventory already counts it. This worksheet does not include conversion overhead, protection design or a contingency allowance.

For a remote cabin, assume the selected base loads average 0.1 kW for 24 hours: 0.1 × 24 = 2.4 kWh. Separately, a separate nonmedical contact and lighting point draws an assumed 20 W for 12 hours: (20 ÷ 1,000) × 12 = 0.24 kWh. The combined illustrative demand is 2.64 kWh.

This calculation deliberately excludes medical equipment; it cannot establish clinical safety or a medical operating duration.

For arithmetic only, if the complete storage chain had a hypothetical 30% round-trip efficiency, delivering 2.64 kWh would require 2.64 ÷ 0.30 = 8.8 kWh of charging input. This is not a measured H2OME efficiency or recovery result. Ongoing demand during charging would add to the required input.

Base assumptions

Base operating window: 24 hours. Extra illustrative load: A separate nonmedical contact and lighting point, 20 W for 12 hours. Replace every input with a measured or professionally established value.

Professional review in New Zealand

In New Zealand, discuss supply arrangements and connection questions with your electricity retailer and distributor. Ask the local council about relevant siting, building and water-use requirements. Use appropriately qualified electrical and hydrogen professionals, and refer workplace safety questions to WorkSafe guidance. This page does not establish a consent or compliance outcome.

For medically dependent people in New Zealand, register with your electricity retailer, the company that bills you, and keep that registration current. Re-register when switching retailers; ask the retailer how the distributor is informed and what clinical confirmation is needed. Follow the clinician and equipment provider's contingency plan. Registration does not guarantee uninterrupted electricity, and H2OME is not a substitute for that plan.

H2OME is in early development. Its 10 kW output figure is a design target, not a proven specification. There is no confirmed price, certification, commercial availability or guaranteed runtime in this guide.

Hydrogen is an energy store, not free energy. Grid input, wind and micro-hydro are the charging options considered here. Each requires its own supply assessment. Do not install hydrogen equipment, modify fixed wiring, bypass protection or improvise a connection from this guide.

Questions

What changes for a remote cabin?

Delivery, weather access and long periods without an occupant affect the decision. The smallest load set is not automatically the simplest system if nobody can respond to an alarm or inspect it. Choose loads that genuinely need unattended supply.

Does this calculation show how long H2OME would run a remote cabin?

No. The 2.64 kWh total is an illustrative demand worksheet, not a runtime result. Actual appliance measurements, usable storage output, starting demand, conversion overhead and reserve limits are needed. The 10 kW design target is not demonstrated output capability.
