Wind input assessment for small business premises in New Zealand

New Zealand planning guidance for a specific property and load boundary. Do not allocate the same input to trading and recovery. H2OME remains in early development.

Wind input assessment: the decision to make

A turbine nameplate rating does not describe the energy available at a particular property. Ask for a site-specific resource assessment, an output estimate with stated assumptions and measurements where appropriate. Terrain, obstacles, equipment limits and maintenance access affect the proposal.

Assess low-input periods as well as a favourable production day. The electrical demand must still be met when wind output falls, and equipment may stop in conditions outside its operating limits. Do not replace resource evidence with a regional climate claim.

Priorities for small business premises

Process equipment, large refrigeration, compressors and all-day trading should not be implied by a small essential-load calculation.

The property boundary

A shop or service office needs to distinguish safe closure from continued trading. Refrigeration, transaction equipment and security have different consequences, and a powered till does not ensure payment networks work.

For small business premises, compare measured wind output with the 6-hour base window, including periods with no useful input. The extra monitoring device requires 0.36 kWh each 24 hours even when production is low, unless its documented operating design says otherwise.

Do not allocate the same input to trading and recovery. Any food, workplace or regulated service obligation needs its own contingency assessment. A development-stage product is not evidence that a business can continue trading safely.

A worked demand worksheet

All numbers below are hypothetical teaching inputs, not measured appliance specifications or product performance. The topic-specific extra load is separate from the base set; omit it if your real inventory already counts it. This worksheet does not include conversion overhead, protection design or a contingency allowance.

For small business premises, assume the selected base loads average 0.46 kW for 6 hours: 0.46 × 6 = 2.76 kWh. Separately, an additional monitoring load at a wind-fed property draws an assumed 15 W for 24 hours: (15 ÷ 1,000) × 24 = 0.36 kWh. The combined illustrative demand is 3.12 kWh.

Even a small continuous load belongs in the budget before generation is allocated to storage.

For arithmetic only, if the complete storage chain had a hypothetical 30% round-trip efficiency, delivering 3.12 kWh would require 3.12 ÷ 0.30 = 10.4 kWh of charging input. This is not a measured H2OME efficiency or recovery result. Ongoing demand during charging would add to the required input.

Base assumptions

Base operating window: 6 hours. Extra illustrative load: An additional monitoring load at a wind-fed property, 15 W for 24 hours. Replace every input with a measured or professionally established value.

Professional review in New Zealand

In New Zealand, discuss supply arrangements and connection questions with your electricity retailer and distributor. Ask the local council about relevant siting, building and water-use requirements. Use appropriately qualified electrical and hydrogen professionals, and refer workplace safety questions to WorkSafe guidance. This page does not establish a consent or compliance outcome.

For medically dependent people in New Zealand, register with your electricity retailer, the company that bills you, and keep that registration current. Re-register when switching retailers; ask the retailer how the distributor is informed and what clinical confirmation is needed. Follow the clinician and equipment provider's contingency plan. Registration does not guarantee uninterrupted electricity, and H2OME is not a substitute for that plan.

H2OME is in early development. Its 10 kW output figure is a design target, not a proven specification. There is no confirmed price, certification, commercial availability or guaranteed runtime in this guide.

Hydrogen is an energy store, not free energy. Grid input, wind and micro-hydro are the charging options considered here. Each requires its own supply assessment. Do not install hydrogen equipment, modify fixed wiring, bypass protection or improvise a connection from this guide.

Questions

What changes for small business premises?

A shop or service office needs to distinguish safe closure from continued trading. Refrigeration, transaction equipment and security have different consequences, and a powered till does not ensure payment networks work. Do not allocate the same input to trading and recovery.

Does this calculation show how long H2OME would run small business premises?

No. The 3.12 kWh total is an illustrative demand worksheet, not a runtime result. Actual appliance measurements, usable storage output, starting demand, conversion overhead and reserve limits are needed. The 10 kW design target is not demonstrated output capability.

Who should review the proposal?

In New Zealand, discuss supply arrangements and connection questions with your electricity retailer and distributor. Ask the local council about relevant siting, building and water-use requirements. Use appropriately qualified electrical and hydrogen professionals, and refer workplace safety questions to WorkSafe guidance. This page does not establish a consent or compliance outcome. Use the worksheet to brief the relevant professionals, not to install, modify or operate hydrogen equipment.
