Planning for an extended outage for small business premises in Australia

Australia planning guidance for a specific property and load boundary. Make safe closure the first operational boundary. H2OME remains in early development.

Planning for an extended outage: the decision to make

A long interruption changes the task from sustaining normal life to preserving defined essentials and arranging alternatives. Recalculate the operating schedule when input is unavailable or below expectations. Keep a decision point for reduced operation, relocation or safe closure rather than repeatedly moving the goalposts.

Stored hydrogen is finite. Storage duration and electrical autonomy are different quantities, and neither proves that essential demand can be sustained for an unknown outage. Use measured usable output, known inventory and an independently workable contingency plan.

Priorities for small business premises

Process equipment, large refrigeration, compressors and all-day trading should not be implied by a small essential-load calculation.

The property boundary

A shop or service office needs to distinguish safe closure from continued trading. Refrigeration, transaction equipment and security have different consequences, and a powered till does not ensure payment networks work.

For small business premises, the 2.76 kWh base example covers only 6 hours. Repeating that block over several days also repeats its energy demand; add the separate daily information station only once per intended daily use and set a relocation or closure decision.

Make safe closure the first operational boundary. Any food, workplace or regulated service obligation needs its own contingency assessment. A development-stage product is not evidence that a business can continue trading safely.

A worked demand worksheet

All numbers below are hypothetical teaching inputs, not measured appliance specifications or product performance. The topic-specific extra load is separate from the base set; omit it if your real inventory already counts it. This worksheet does not include conversion overhead, protection design or a contingency allowance.

For small business premises, assume the selected base loads average 0.46 kW for 6 hours: 0.46 × 6 = 2.76 kWh. Separately, an extra daily information and charging station draws an assumed 35 W for 6 hours: (35 ÷ 1,000) × 6 = 0.21 kWh. The combined illustrative demand is 2.97 kWh.

Repeat this daily energy allowance for each planned day; the actual stored inventory still has to be verified.

For arithmetic only, if the complete storage chain had a hypothetical 30% round-trip efficiency, delivering 2.97 kWh would require 2.97 ÷ 0.30 = 9.9 kWh of charging input. This is not a measured H2OME efficiency or recovery result. Ongoing demand during charging would add to the required input.

Base assumptions

Base operating window: 6 hours. Extra illustrative load: An extra daily information and charging station, 35 W for 6 hours. Replace every input with a measured or professionally established value.

Professional review in Australia

In Australia, check connection questions with your electricity retailer and distributor. Use electrical professionals holding the licence required in your state or territory, and ask the local council about relevant siting, building and water-use requirements. Energy Made Easy covers New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory; outside those jurisdictions, check the relevant state or territory consumer energy comparison resource. Compare your actual tariff and charging window, not an assumed national rate. This guide does not claim to know a particular state's approval process.

For life support equipment in Australia, keep life support registration current with the electricity retailer or distributor as applicable and confirm how the other party is notified. Follow your clinician and equipment provider's contingency plan. Registration is not a guarantee of continuous electricity, and H2OME cannot replace an independent medical contingency.

H2OME is in early development. Its 10 kW output figure is a design target, not a proven specification. There is no confirmed price, certification, commercial availability or guaranteed runtime in this guide.

Hydrogen is an energy store, not free energy. Grid input, wind and micro-hydro are the charging options considered here. Each requires its own supply assessment. Do not install hydrogen equipment, modify fixed wiring, bypass protection or improvise a connection from this guide.

Questions

What changes for small business premises?

A shop or service office needs to distinguish safe closure from continued trading. Refrigeration, transaction equipment and security have different consequences, and a powered till does not ensure payment networks work. Make safe closure the first operational boundary.

Does this calculation show how long H2OME would run small business premises?

No. The 2.97 kWh total is an illustrative demand worksheet, not a runtime result. Actual appliance measurements, usable storage output, starting demand, conversion overhead and reserve limits are needed. The 10 kW design target is not demonstrated output capability.
