Water balance and quality for a rental home in Australia

Australia planning guidance for a specific property and load boundary. Do not transfer speculative specifications into a tenancy promise. H2OME remains in early development.

Water balance and quality: the decision to make

Electrolysis requires suitable water quality, and a fuel cell produces water when hydrogen reacts with oxygen. Whether returned water can be captured, treated and reused depends on the actual system. A closed-loop diagram alone does not establish a maintenance-free or water-independent installation.

Request a measured water balance covering feed quality, treatment, recovery, losses and service events. Drinking-water reserves are a separate household priority. Do not assume ordinary tank water is suitable feed or attempt to modify water treatment from general advice.

Priorities for rental home

Permanent heating changes and fixed equipment additions require agreement; they are not tenant outage workarounds.

The property boundary

The occupant can document appliance demand, but the owner controls many permanent alterations. A change of tenant can also change the loads and make an old essential-circuit list inaccurate.

For a rental home, separate the process-water assessment from any drinking-water pumping in the base set. Count the hypothetical treatment auxiliary only if it is outside the measured conversion boundary; otherwise adding its 0.08 kWh would count it twice.

Do not transfer speculative specifications into a tenancy promise. Permission, responsibilities and any required consents must be resolved before a proposed fixed system is treated as a viable option. Portable preparedness may be more appropriate while that is unresolved.

A worked demand worksheet

All numbers below are hypothetical teaching inputs, not measured appliance specifications or product performance. The topic-specific extra load is separate from the base set; omit it if your real inventory already counts it. This worksheet does not include conversion overhead, protection design or a contingency allowance.

For a rental home, assume the selected base loads average 0.15 kW for 8 hours: 0.15 × 8 = 1.2 kWh. Separately, an additional hypothetical water-treatment auxiliary draws an assumed 40 W for 2 hours: (40 ÷ 1,000) × 2 = 0.08 kWh. The combined illustrative demand is 1.28 kWh.

This is electrical demand only, not a water-volume estimate or a confirmed H2OME component rating.

For arithmetic only, if the complete storage chain had a hypothetical 30% round-trip efficiency, delivering 1.28 kWh would require 1.28 ÷ 0.30 = 4.2667 kWh of charging input. This is not a measured H2OME efficiency or recovery result. Ongoing demand during charging would add to the required input.

Base assumptions

Base operating window: 8 hours. Extra illustrative load: An additional hypothetical water-treatment auxiliary, 40 W for 2 hours. Replace every input with a measured or professionally established value.

Professional review in Australia

In Australia, check connection questions with your electricity retailer and distributor. Use electrical professionals holding the licence required in your state or territory, and ask the local council about relevant siting, building and water-use requirements. Energy Made Easy covers New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory; outside those jurisdictions, check the relevant state or territory consumer energy comparison resource. Compare your actual tariff and charging window, not an assumed national rate. This guide does not claim to know a particular state's approval process.

For life support equipment in Australia, keep life support registration current with the electricity retailer or distributor as applicable and confirm how the other party is notified. Follow your clinician and equipment provider's contingency plan. Registration is not a guarantee of continuous electricity, and H2OME cannot replace an independent medical contingency.

H2OME is in early development. Its 10 kW output figure is a design target, not a proven specification. There is no confirmed price, certification, commercial availability or guaranteed runtime in this guide.

Hydrogen is an energy store, not free energy. Grid input, wind and micro-hydro are the charging options considered here. Each requires its own supply assessment. Do not install hydrogen equipment, modify fixed wiring, bypass protection or improvise a connection from this guide.

Questions

What changes for a rental home?

The occupant can document appliance demand, but the owner controls many permanent alterations. A change of tenant can also change the loads and make an old essential-circuit list inaccurate. Do not transfer speculative specifications into a tenancy promise.

Does this calculation show how long H2OME would run a rental home?

No. The 1.28 kWh total is an illustrative demand worksheet, not a runtime result. Actual appliance measurements, usable storage output, starting demand, conversion overhead and reserve limits are needed. The 10 kW design target is not demonstrated output capability.

Who should review the proposal?
